The energy that surrounds you can contribute to a more Positive attitude (or Negative, for that matter).

You can help yourself maintain a positive frame of mind, which will help with positive self-talk; by surrounding yourself with positive energy in your life. You can get that by adding the following elements to your life:

Uplifting Music: Listening to music that not only has a soothing melody, but an uplifting message, can be great for developing positive self-talk. Have you ever had a song ‘stuck in your head’ for a few hours or days, the lyrics repeating themselves in your mind? If those lyrics were positive and inspirational, that would be a good thing. It’s a much better mental soundtrack to have than a running stream of complaints, criticisms or self-limiting thoughts, or even songs that had more depressing or sad lyrics. (Feeling Good by Nina Simone; A Beautiful Day by India Arie; Don’t Worry, Be Happy by Bobby McFerring.) Create your own playlist of songs that uplift you and make you feel happy and positive.

Inspirational Books: Books on strength, personal power, enlightenment, or self-help can be good resources to help you change your outlook and the things you say to yourself. Rather than triggering habitual self-defeating thoughts, you can find yourself thinking of new can-do concepts when times get tough. (Gary Zukav’s “The Heart of the Soul”Sarah Ban Breathnach’s classic “Simple Abundance”.)

Inspirational Movies or You-Tube clips:

Watching a movie or a video clip can dramatically affect your mood and energy. Ensure that you watch movies that celebrate the human spirit and uplift and inspire you. (Braveheart, Dead Poet Society, Good Will Hunting, Lord of the Rings, The Bucket List, The Notebook, etc) There are also a myriad of clips available on electronic media/ social sites (ie You-Tube that is uplifting and reaffirming of the power of positive spirit.

Positive People: One of the most important ways you can get (and keep) positive energy in your life is with the company you keep. Do your friends uplift you, or bring you down? Are they critical, or complementary? Ideal friendships provide support when you’re down, fun when you’re up, wisdom when you’re lost, and positive regard. Good friends can inspire you to reach greater heights, and see your strengths even when you don’t always. Pay attention to how your friends make you feel, and if they’re less than supportive, start putting your energy and time toward people who are better suited to be your friend.

This is especially important when you are on your weight-loss journey. Finding positive support on your weight-loss journey can be a key factor in your success. You can find this in:

  • A TLC-Diet Buddy: Find a positive friend to join you and follow their TLC-Program at the same time. You can encourage and motivate and inspire each other!
  • Support group: Join the various groups that are available to you for motivation and support (ie TLC Trim Buddies, Instagram, Twitter, etc)
  • Your TLC Coach: communicate with your Coach and read the information provided to you

Surrounding yourself with positive energy will assist you in maintaining a positive frame of mind and positively affect your wellbeing!
