Scheduling a good night’s sleep could be one of the smartest health priorities you set. It’s not just daytime drowsiness you risk when short changing yourself on your seven to nine hours.
If you want to lose weight, experts say you need to get enough sleep. Upon review of large observational studies, findings show that the risk for obesity is consistently higher for those who clock less than 6 nightly hours of sleep. Specifically, researchers have reported that women who sleep 5 hours or less per night generally weigh more than women who sleep 7 hours per night. Not only are we likely to gain weight as a result of interrupted or too few hours of sleep, but we’re more likely to put on pounds in the dreaded abdominal region.
Researchers say that how much you sleep and quite possibility the quality of your sleep may silently orchestrate a symphony of hormonal activity tied to your appetite. Appetite-controlling hormones get thrown out of whack and cravings for unhealthy foods intensify. Study subjects reported stronger hankerings for starchy carbohydrates such as pasta, cookies, candy, and sweets, than for dairy, fruit, meat, or vegetables. Insufficient sleep can also cause the release of additional cortisol — the stress hormone — and can stimulate hunger.
Lack of sleep can also impact on your general health and wellbeing. Possible health consequences of getting too little or poor sleep can involve the cardiovascular, endocrine, immune, and nervous systems.
Diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance may become more likely- people getting five or fewer hours of sleep each night were 2.5 times more likely to be diabetic, those getting six hours or fewer were 1.7 times more likely.
Heart Attacks are more likely– that heart attacks were 45 percent more likely in women who slept five or fewer hours per night than in those who got more. Too little sleep also promotes calcium build up in the heart arteries, leading to the plaques that can cause heart attacks and strokes.
You may be more prone to depression – Adults who don’t sleep enough report more mental distress, depression, and alcohol use.
You won’t be as nice– In general, sleep loss is likely to negatively affect your mood, causing irritability, impatience, and an inability to concentrate.
You’ll look old– Beauty sleep is no myth: People are perceived as being less attractive and more unhealthy when they’re sleep-deprived than when they’re well-rested.
Death may be nearer- Those who get five hours or less per night have approximately 15 percent greater risk of dying, regardless of the cause; according to three large population-based studies published in the journals.
